D'Aulnoy, Mme. La Comtesse, arranged by Rachel Field,
The White Cat and other old French fairy tales.
NY, Macmillan, (1967). 1st ptg. VG in VG DJ. Of all the entrances to the world of "once upon a time," the door opened by The White Cat is one of the most enchanting. Coaches are drawn by fireflies and swans, earthenware pitchers are transformed to diamond-crusted gold and wicked stepmothers receive their just desserts. Five of Countess d'Aulnoy's most bewitching stories are collected here first published in 1928 and reissued in a facsimile. Turquoise binding, silver lettering, cream-colored decorated DJ. Tanning to DJ edges with one small tear.

 FIELD, Rachel, Calico Bush
FIELD, Rachel
Calico Bush
New York, The Macmillan Company, 1931. Hardcover. Wood engravings by Allen Lewis. 8vo. Green and ivory patterned cloth with front board paper label. xi, 213pp. Frontispiece engraving, 3 full-page engravings and many small engravings. Very good. Text block tight and internally near fine, with just faintest edgewear to binding. Handome first edition of what is probably Field's best-known work, a historical novel set in Maine like much of her work -- winner of the coveted Newbery Honor award. On the front flyleaf, she boldly inscribes and signs it in black ink in year of publication "For / Wanda Anne Tyler / with best wishes from / Rachel Field / 1931" -- and beneath adds a lovely small ink sketch of a sailboat cruising along a shoreline. For having published so prolifically in a life too short at 47 years (1894-1942), more than two dozen titles over two decades (including a Newbery Medal winner in 1929 and a posthumous Caldecott Medal in 1944), this versatile novelist, poet and children's book writer seems to have signed relatively few titles -- and we have not seen. The wood engravings by Allen Lewis (1873-1957) are as usual superlative and powerful. .

New York, NY: MacMillan Company, 1932. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. Hardcover. Illustrated by Allen Lewis. B&W Illustrations; This book is in Very Good+ condition and is lacking the dust jacket. The book and its contents are in mostly clean, bright condition. The book covers have some sunning / toning to the spine and spine joints. The text pages are clean and bright. "Arthur Allen Lewis 'Allen Lewis': A distinguished early twentieth century painter, etcher, illustrator and most particularly wood engraver, Allen Lewis studied art under George Bridgman in Buffalo before completing his studies in Paris under Gerome. Lewis's art first came to national attention in 1904 when he was awarded the bronze medal at the St. Louis Exposition. During the following decades his reputation continued to grow through both his original wood engravings and in his illustrations for stories and poetry by Whitman and Balzac and in such well-known books as Journeys to Bagdad and Paul Bunyon."
